Common console repairs

What is wrong with your console?

Not sure what has failed? That's fine. Our technicians diagnose the fault first and explain what is wrong and what the repair involves before anything is agreed.

02

No Power / Won’t Turn On

Blue, white or red light and nothing on screen, or nothing at all — we diagnose the power supply, board and components to find out why it will not boot.

We can help with:

  • No signal or standby light only
  • Light flickers then shuts off
  • Console won't respond to power button
  • Blown power supply component
  • Full board-level power diagnostic

Overheating & Loud Fan

Shutting down mid-game or sounding like a jet engine is a sign the cooling system is struggling. We clean, re-paste and replace the fan if needed, to bring temperatures and noise levels back down.

We can help with:

  • Console shuts down under load
  • Loud, constant fan noise
  • Thermal paste dried out
  • Dust-blocked heatsink or vents
  • Full internal deep clean

PS5 Liquid Metal Replacement

Sony used liquid metal on the PS5 APU rather than thermal paste. It migrates and dries out over time, which is a serious cycling and overheating risk that standard thermal paste doesn't fix.

We can help with:

  • Recurring overheat shutdowns
  • Liquid metal migration on the board
  • Safe replacement and reapplication
  • Full APU and heatsink inspection
  • Post-service stress testing

Disc Drive Repair

Won’t load or spins, grinding or insert — we inspect or replace the disc drive on PlayStation and Xbox disc consoles.

We can help with:

  • Disc not read or ejecting repeatedly
  • Grinding or clicking noise on load
  • Disc drive not spinning at all
  • Laser lens cleaning and calibration
  • Full drive replacement

Joy-Con & Controller Drift

Stick drift on Nintendo Joy-Con, DualSense and Xbox controllers — we replace the analogue stick module so your input is accurate again.

We can help with:

  • Characters moving with no input
  • Sticks feeling loose or sticky
  • Buttons registering as stuck
  • Analogue module replacement
  • Full controller re-calibration

Storage, Liquid & Board-Level

SSD failures and corrupted storage, liquid damage and deeper board-level faults — diagnosed properly, not guesswork.

We can help with:

  • Console won't recognise storage
  • Liquid spill or submersion
  • Corrupted save data recovery
  • Micro-soldering board repair
  • Full fault report before repair

Console repair guidance

Not sure what to do next?

How do I know if it’s the HDMI port or something else?

If the display flickers, drops out when the cable is moved, or shows no signal at all while the console's power light stays on, it's very likely the HDMI port. A completely dead console with no lights points to a power supply or board fault instead. Our free diagnostic confirms which one it is before you pay anything.

What should I bring with my console?

Bring the console itself. You don't need the power cable, HDMI lead or box unless the fault is intermittent and only happens with your specific cable — in that case, bring it along too.

How long do console repairs take?

Most HDMI, power and controller repairs are completed the same day or within 24–48 hours. Micro-soldering, liquid metal and board-level repairs typically take 2–5 working days depending on parts availability.

Is it worth repairing an older console?

In most cases, yes — an HDMI port or fan repair typically costs far less than a replacement console, and your saves and game library stay intact. We'll always tell you honestly if a repair isn't worthwhile.

Console repair FAQs

Contact JD Phones
1. Do you repair PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch?

Yes. JD Phones repairs PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (including OLED and Lite) and Steam Deck, covering HDMI, power, overheating and controller faults.

2. How much does a console repair cost?

Pricing depends on the fault and console model. We give a free diagnostic and a fixed price quote before any repair work begins — there's no charge to find out what's wrong.

3. Can you fix PS5 / Xbox HDMI ports?

Yes. HDMI port replacement is one of our most common repairs. We micro-solder a new port in place rather than replacing the whole motherboard, keeping the cost down.

4. Can you fix Joy-Con drift?

Yes. We replace the analogue stick module inside Nintendo Joy-Con controllers to fully resolve drift, rather than just cleaning around the stick.

5. My console overheats and shuts down — can you help?

Yes. This is usually caused by dried thermal paste or (on PS5) migrated liquid metal. We clean the internals, reapply thermal compound or liquid metal, and stress test before returning it.

6. Where are you based?

JD Phones has repair workshops in Newcastle, Sunderland and Heaton, plus a UK-wide mail-in repair service for customers who can't visit in person.
